COIR MAKING:Alleppey is enriched with coconut palms; the husk of the coconut is used for making coir and other products like mats, mattresses, brushes etc. Coir making is a unique feature found in Alleppey and its premises. It is the chief occupation of the common backwater folk. There are different villages engaged in coir manufacturing. It is very interesting to watch the coir making by the village ladies with the help of weaving wheels. It will be an amazing experience to the tourists. It is an indigenous product of the state and is more eco friendly.

BIRD WATCHING: Pied Cuckoo, White Throated King Fisher, Black Drongo ….the list cannot accommodate all the birds find in Alleppey backwaters. But it is sure that Alleeppey is a paradise to bird watchers. Birds from various species are here, it is a must activity for the tourists who are in a houseboat to identify the birds they are seeing. The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary shelters numerous migratory birds. The backwaters of Kerala are a heaven for numerous water birds and migratory birds that amazes the tourists.

CANOEING: Canoeing through the backwaters is a different experience while you paddle through the small canals and interact with the local villagers. You can imbibe the natural beauty along with the local activities like fishing. Vembanad Lake is a serene backwater stretch for a thrilling canoeing experience. Other hot spots for this adventure include - Kollam Backwaters, Karumadi Lake, Kayamkulam and Ashtamudi Lake. Canoeing is a good way to explore hidden forest trails, witness a variety of flora and fauna. Before setting out canoeing, make sure you carry your swimsuit, life jacket, towel, sunglasses, hat, drinking water and sun block etc

KAYAKING: Kumarakom, Kovalam and Alleppey are the well known destinations for kayaking in Kerala. A kayak can accommodate only 2 people and it’s all up to the paddlers how to maneuver the kayak. You should keep yourself well informed about the weather conditions, tides and water current to ensure complete safety. Avoid kayaking in monsoons. Beginners are advised to go with trained guides and adhere to the safety guidelines. Necessary equipments are available on hire from the kayaking camps or school. Essentials include comfortable clothing, life jackets, sun tan lotion and a hat.

BOAT BUILDING: Alumkadavu and Alleppey are the two major houseboat building yards in Kerala. There are numerous small boat building yards throughout the backwaters. The dexterity of traditional boat builders is exhibited in making the finest boats in the world. Houseboat building is different from other boat building. It is the tying together huge planks of wood makes these traditional Kettuvallams that refurbished into modern houseboat. Wood cutting, tying with coir, Oiling with fish oil, are different stages of the work. The tourists can have a direct experience with the boat building.
